Doten’s Construction, which is based in Freeport, is overseeing construction of Freeport Car Wash at 392 U.S. Route 1, on what’s becoming a more developed stretch. The car wash will be 2,400 square feet.

With Doten’s managing the project, other members of the team are two Portland companies, Casco Bay Engineering and J.P. Gauthier Architects. Financing was provided by Bath Savings.

The stretch of Route 1 south of Freeport’s Maine shopping district has gotten momentum in the past couple years. There’s still open space. For years, the car wash site housed a dilapidated garage with a well-worn sailboat whose hull was spray painted “FREE,” to which someone later added “SMILES.”

In recent months, Maguire Construction of Yarmouth has been working on its new headquarters and cabinet shop across the street from the car wash site. Others that have expanded on or moved to that stretch include Maine Beer Co., Freeport Emporium, Casco Bay Ford, DiMillo’s Yacht Sales and Maine Optometry.

As part of that, it will partner with Habitat for Humanity’s York County chapter to construct a new home for a deserving family, donating 100% of the building materials. With the Saco site, Casco-based Hancock Lumber will have nine lumber yards, as well as seven kitchen design showrooms and three sawmills. It also owns Fairfield-based Mainely Trusses, which manufactures roof and floor trusses.
