Canada opens first LNG terminal

Canaport LNG, the first liquefied natural gas terminal in Canada, officially opened yesterday in Saint John, N.B.

Repsol and Irving Oil built the $1 billion LNG terminal, the first on North America's East Coast in 30 years, to supply natural gas to the Northeastern United States, according to the Associated Press. It was unclear if the LNG terminal's existence will affect the viability of the three LNG terminals being proposed for Washington County. "Who can say now what the effect of the Canaport LNG project will be?" Harold Clossey, executive director of the Sunrise County Economic Development Council, told the AP. "This can affect the U.S. companies competitiveness."

Canada has opposed the proposed LNG terminals on Maine's side of Passamaquoddy Bay. Robert Godfrey, a spokesman for Save Passamaquoddy Bay, told the AP the LNG terminal in New Brunswick was located at an "industry-compliant" site, while the three proposed terminals in Maine are not.
