Cape Elizabeth doctor new CDC head

Sheila Pinette, a physician in Cape Elizabeth, has been chosen to lead the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pinette will begin her new job as the state's top public health officer on May 1, according to the Portland Press Herald. She worked as a physician assistant at Maine Medical Center before earning her doctor of osteopathic medicine from the University of New England in 2000. She will leave a medical practice in Cape Elizabeth to lead the CDC and oversee the state's public health initiatives.

Stephen Sears has been serving as acting CDC director since December, when longtime director Dora Anne Mills stepped down to become medical director of MaineCare. Mills was fired from that job in February, one of a number of leadership changes made in the Department of Health and Human Services since Gov. Paul LePage took office.
