A Lewiston anesthesiologist hopes to bring a casino to the city on a downtown parcel currently occupied by Bates Mill No. 5.
The mill, slated for demolition, sits on eight acres at the city's gateway to Auburn. Dr. Ron Chicoine told the Sun Journal that he was hoping to buy the property to site a casino, but would consider other locations as well.
Chicoine is working with former Lewiston Rep. Stavros Mendros, a professional signature gatherer, on a ballot initiative to get approval for an L-A casino. Lewiston and Auburn approved previous ballot initiatives for a casino in Oxford, indicating their support of recreational gambling, Mendros told the paper. The proposal was panned by Black Bear Entertainment, backers of a competing proposal to get a casino in Oxford County, that they expect to bring to voters next year.
