The Cat headed to Portland after successful sea trials

The Cat, the 349-foot ferry that will shuttle up to 750 passengers between Maine and Nova Scotia, has finished sea trials off of South Carolina.
After two months of renovations and repairs, The Cat, the 349-foot ferry that will shuttle up to 750 passengers between Maine and Nova Scotia, is headed to Portland for its first season, which kicks off on June 15.
“We are extremely grateful to our Bay Ferries’ team who led this extremely complex and challenging project against a very tight timeline,” Mark MacDonald, chairman and CEO of Bay Ferries Ltd., said in a statement.
During The Cat’s sea trials, which took place in the waters off South Carolina, the vessel reached a speed of 42 knots (approximately 48 mph), slightly above the vessel’s expected operating speed between 33-35 knots.
The Cat’s 185-nautical-mile trips between the ports of Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, are expected to take 5.5 hours, approximately half the time as its predecessor, the Nova Star.
