Central Maine Healthcare finances under review

In September, Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston CEO and President Jeff Brickman, a former Colorado-based Centura Health administrator, succeeded Peter E. Chalke.

Three months later, Brickman has hired Illinois-based consulting firm Kaufman Hall to develop a plan for the hospital system’s future in the face of a significant budgetary shortfall over the past fiscal year, the Sun Journal reported.

The amount of the shortfall hasn’t been released yet. But CMHC made a $9.8 million profit in fiscal year 2015.

"I am working like hell to make sure that we can sustain this organization for the long term because of the community dependence on what we do for them," Brickman told the newspaper.

Brickman hired David Thompson, also from Centura Health, as chief financial officer to replace CFO Phil Morissette, who will now serve as CMHC vice president of finance and controller.

CMHC is one of the area's largest employers, with about 4,200 employees at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, hospitals in Rumford and Bridgton, the Dempsey Center, the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute and medical practices throughout central and western Maine.
