Charter school applications advance

Five applications to establish charter schools have been submitted so far and are under state review.

Gov. Paul LePage said the applications are already being considered by the Charter School Commission and hearings have been scheduled for Friday and Monday, according to The Associated Press. A total of nine letters of intent to set up charter schools were filed since the state began seeking applications May 1. Letters of intent were due May 16, and full applications are due June 29. The state hopes to approve the schools before the fall.

Last June, a law was passed to allow charter schools, which are public institutions that are free to students, but can operate more independently than other public schools.
