Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp., Maine's largest construction company, has been awarded a $12 million contract for an infrastructure project at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

The contract, announced over the weekend by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, calls for Cianbro to expand an outdated warehouse facility that will help the shipyard receive, inspect and distribute submarine components for worldwide fleet support.

"I have long advocated for the Navy to address the modernization needs at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and I am so pleased to announce that the contract has been officially awarded for this critically needed upgrade," Collins said in a news release dated June 15.

She also said that the shipyard is critical to southern Maine's economy, and to the country's national security, adding: "This expansion will help ensure the readiness of our nation's submarine fleet and provide valuable support to the hardworking employees at the shipyard as they repair and modernize Navy submarines.

Spread out across 300 acres on a group of islands in the Piscataqua River and linked by two bridges to Kittery, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is tasked with the overhaul, repair and modernization of U.S. Navy submarines.

Often referred to as Portsmouth Navy Yard, the facility is sometimes confused with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.

Its 2018 economic impact was $882 million, according to the latest annual report from the Seacoast Shipyard Association dated February 2019.

The shipyard employed a total of 6,972 civilians in 2018, of which 3,894 are from Maine. The total civilian payroll amounted to $548 million in 2018, while the military payroll was just above $44 million.

Cianbro's other projects at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard include a 70-slip marina completed in 2012, replacement of a berthing pier completed in 2003 and a new caisson sheet across the mouth of Dry Dock No. 2 completed in 1984, according to the company's website.

More recently in the area, Cianbro constructed and replaced the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge that connects Kittery with Portsmouth.
