Cianbro picked for bridge repairs

Cianbro has won a contract to make repairs to the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, which was damaged Monday when a 470-foot tanker collided with it.

The Portland Press Herald reported repairs to bring the 73-year-old bridge back to its pre-collision condition are estimated at $2.5 million, though making the bridge safe for vehicle traffic may require less work.

The bridge carries an average of 14,000 vehicles a day and is expected to be closed for up to a month for repairs.

Officials from Maine and New Hampshire — the states jointly own the bridge — are now working with representatives from the Hamburg, Germany-based company responsible for the ship's management to determine what caused the tanker to break away from its moorings and drift into the bridge.

Attorneys general from both states will also seek reimbursement for the accident after determining who is at fault.
