City + Harbor Real Estate donates to lobster industry defense fund

Fletcher Smith-McNaboe and Michael McNaboe of City + Harbor Real Estate Group in Rockland said they are donating $200 from every real estate closing they have in 2023 to the Save Maine Lobstermen Fund, the legal defense fund established by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association.

In 2021, the National Marine Fisheries Services released a 10-year whale plan requiring the Maine lobster fishery to reduce what the industry has said is already minimal risk to the North Atlantic right whale by 98%.

“This would force Maine lobstermen out of business, devastating their families and our coastal fishing communities throughout midcoast Maine and beyond,” the couple said in a news release.

The couple said that, having grown up on the coast of Maine, they “understand the importance of the lobstering industry in their community.”

The Maine Lobstermen’s Association established the defense fund to raise $10 million to fund legal efforts challenging the federal regulation.

“The reality is that the communities that will be hit hardest by these federal regulations are the places where our friends and families live and work,” said McNaboe, who worked in the lobstering industry before going into real estate.

Smith-McNaboe said she’s the daughter of a Maine lobsterman and was born and raised in Tenants Harbor.

“I’m a product of the lobstering industry and it’s time for all of us who have our roots in it – or those who benefit from it – to step up and protect it now more than ever,” she said.
