Civic center kicks off $33M renovation

The Cumberland County Civic Center launched its $33 million renovation today with a public groundbreaking ceremony at the Portland event center’s Free Street entrance.

Approved 58%-42% by county voters last fall, the $33 million renovation will be done in phases and is expected to be completed by early fall 2013. The Portland Press Herald reported that renovations include adding suites and premium seating to the arena, upgrading the ticketing and concession areas, improving the heating and cooling systems and enlarging the loading dock and locker and dressing rooms.

Cianbro, based in Pittsfield, was hired in February as construction manager for the renovation work. In December, Civic Center trustees selected WBRC, based in Bangor, and Sink Combs Dethlefs, headquartered in Denver, as the architectural and engineering firms to assist with the renovation design.
