Civic Center starts filling slots left by Pirates

The Cumberland County Civic Center’s management said it has started to fill some of the dates left vacant by the departure of the Portland Pirates hockey team.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Steven Crane, the civic center’s general manager, said the center has added a monster truck event for March 15 and other concerts in February and March, though he declined earlier this week to disclose the names of the bands.

Crane said that he would not have booked the monster truck event if the Pirates were planning to play in Portland this season because of the cost of taking apart and putting back together the hockey rink.

Neal Pratt, chairman of the civic center’s board, said the arena has been contacted by other teams interested in playing there in the 2014-2015 season, at the earliest, but that it hasn’t entered any formal negotiations.
