Clam flats safe again

The state has lifted its ban on clam harvesting along the length of Maine's coast as red tide levels have declined.

The Department of Marine Resources reopened clam flats in the southern, Down East and Acadia regions of Maine, the Associated Press reported, but large stretches of the coast are still closed to the harvesting of mussels, European oysters and carnivorous snails. Officials say the ban on harvesting those shellfish should be lifted in the coming weeks.

After detecting record-high levels of red tide, an algae that produces a toxin absorbed by shellfish, the department closed down clam flats and other harvest areas for more than two months. The high levels even led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to warn against eating lobster tomalley.
