Clark Insurance Co., one of Maine’s largest insurance agencies, moved into new space in Portland’s Stroudwater neighborhood.
The company leased a newly constructed, 25,000-square-foot building from Northland Enterprises LLC, at 1945 Congress St. The site is opposite the Portland International Jetport and close to Unum’s Portland campus. Clark had a short move, from 2385 Congress St.
Its new office space, designed by Lisa Whited of Workplace Transformation Facilitation in Portland, features open work stations, mixed with numerous conference rooms and smaller “huddle” rooms. It has an on-site café and gym, both in close proximity to the work areas. All areas have big windows and an abundance of natural light. Wright-Ryan Construction of Portland was the general contractor.
James Brissenden, the company’s marketing and communication specialist, said the space was designed to be appealing to both clients and prospective employees.
Clark Insurance has 85 employees at the site. With additional offices in Windham, Saco and Gorham, as well as Manchester, N.H., and Lowell, Mass., it employs 108 people. Founded on Monument Square in Portland in 1931, it offers a full range of insurance products. It is 100% employee-owned.
Clients include Sigco, the Cancer Community Center Woodford Family Services and the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center.
Part of the décor — still in development— will be a “story wall,” with environmental portraits by Portland photographer Tim Greenway, a longtime contributor to Mainebiz. The portraits will tell the story of Clark’s clients. Among the dozen portraits are shots of Mark Swann, director of the nonprofit Preble Street; Alain Nahimana, executive director of the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center; and Chip Gray, owner of the Harraseeket Inn.
In addition to Portland-based Northland, others involved in the new site were Bangor Savings Bank, which provided financing; Eastern Excavation, Pinkham & Greer Consulting Engineers and Archetype Architects, which designed three buildings in the office park and the interior of a medical building next door to Clark (see below).

Clark Insurance will be the anchor tenant in an office park that will also include a building devoted to medical practices.
The building is being developed for Dr. Michael Bedecs and his partners in medical practices, according to Josh Benthien, a partner at Northland Enterprises:
The building is still under construction but is expected to open this year.
