Closure sends more work to Maine mills

Paper mills in Jay and Bucksport are getting extra work as a result of the permanent closure of a sister facility in Minnesota.

Verso Paper Corp., based in Memphis, decided to close its mill in Sartell, Minn., following a Memorial Day explosion and fire that killed one worker and injured five others. Company officials announced the closure Thursday to its 250 workers who had been laid off since the fire. The closure reduces production of Verso's coated groundwood capacity by 20% and will eliminate approximately 35,000 tons of annual supercalendered paper capacity.

Verso spokesman Bill Cohen told The Associated Press that some of the work had already been transferred and the increased workload will not result in more jobs at the Maine mills.
