Central Maine Power Co.'s $1.4 billion project to upgrade transmission lines across much of the state has received its next-to-last major municipal approval, after Kennebunk officials approved work there.
The Kennebunk Planning Department gave the final OK to CMP's proposal to upgrade 5.5 miles of lines as part of the company's Maine Power Reliability Program, which will revamp 450 miles of transmission lines from the Penobscot County town of Orrington to Eliot in York County, the Journal Tribune reported. CMP will also expand a substation in Kennebunk. According to The Associated Press, Bowdoin is the only town that has not approved upgrades. CMP has delayed its permit request there because the permit is only valid for one year, and work is not scheduled to soon begin in Bowdoin.
Work on the MPRP is already under way, currently providing 2,200 jobs, CMP spokesman John Carroll told the Tribune. The company says the upgrades will double the state's capacity when they are completed in 2015.
