CMP opens residential time-of-use plans

Central Maine Power Co. has begun enrolling its residential customers in variable billing plans that will charge less for off-peak use.

The program allows customers to pay less for power used during off-peak hours — before 7 a.m. and after 8 p.m. — according to a press release.

The rates for the time-of-use plan will change each month as opposed to standard-offer rates, which are set for the entire year. Currently, around three-fourths of residential customers in areas of the state served by CMP and Bangor Hydro Electric receive standard offer service.

Upon its launch in March, off-peak energy use from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. will be 5.2 cents per kilowatt hour, 1.6 cents less than the standard offer price. But power used during peak hours under the program will be around 8 cents, coming in at 1.2 cents higher than the standard offer.

CMP will enroll customers in the new program through Jan. 31.
