Coalition defends drink tax

A new coalition is challenging opponents of new drink taxes, which the state Legislature enacted recently to help pay for Maine's Dirigo health insurance program.

The coalition, which is comprised of doctors, seniors and others, held a news conference on Thursday arguing that repealing taxes on beer, wine, soda and other drinks will deprive thousands of Mainers of health coverage. The coalition is urging Maine voters to not sign a petition by the group, Fed Up with Taxes, which must collect 55,000 signatures by July 17 to force a statewide vote on whether to repeal the taxes, the Associated Press reported.
