Collins, Snowe announce trucker bill

Maine Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe yesterday announced new legislation that would increase truck weight restrictions on all federal highways.

The "Commercial Truck Fuel Savings Demonstration Act of 2008" would increase weight restrictions on all federal highways from 80,000 pounds to 100,000 whenever diesel prices hit $3.50 per gallon or more, according to a joint press release from the senators' offices. The increase would allow trucks carrying up to 100,000 pounds to remain on I-95 in Maine past Augusta, where they must currently detour to smaller roads.

The senators believe the bill will decrease travel time and increase efficiency, both of which will use less gas. The bill is supported by the Maine Department of Transportation, which four years ago found in a study that increasing weight restrictions would save money, decrease damage on smaller roads and be more efficient, according to the Portland Press Herald.
