Committee approves Cashman for PUC

A legislative committee has endorsed Jack Cashman's nomination to the three-member Public Utilities Commission.

The Utilities and Energy Commission voted 11-2 in favor of Gov. John Baldacci's choice to fill the seat left vacant when Kurt Adams resigned in May, according to the Kennebec Journal. Cashman is currently Baldacci's senior economic advisor and the former commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. Cashman told the legislative committee he would try to steer Maine toward alternative sources of energy rather than fossil fuels. As PUC commissioner, Cashman would earn a $117,000 salary, the paper reported.

The full Senate will meet in a special session Aug. 20 to consider the nominations of Cashman and others by Baldacci.
