Container ship skips out

Maine's only container ship service will stop servicing Portland after January 1. No replacement is yet planned.

Eimskip, an Icelandic company that has transported containers from Portland to Nova Scotia since this summer, will discontinue service after its container ship, the Simone J, calls on Portland on Christmas Day, according to the Portland Press Herald. Jeff Monroe, Portland's ports and transportation director, said the decision was not because of a lack of demand for the service. "I think the company is having some kinds of internal problems," Monroe told the paper.

Maine companies that use the service, which connected them to Halifax, a major transoceanic hub, will have to resort to a bi-monthly barge for international shipments run by Columbia Coastal that runs between Portland, Boston and the port of New York and New Jersey, the paper reported.
