Hospital settles Medicare case

Down East Community Hospital in Machias has settled a Medicare billing case with the federal government, according to a report today from the Associated Press.

The hospital will pay the government more than $108,000 in outstanding claims, effectively ending an investigation into allegations Down East over-billed Medicare from 2002 to 2005 for the cost of transfusions and related goods and services, according to the AP. The government alleged the hospital knew about the inaccurate billing but did nothing to stop it.

The Office of the U.S. Inspector General and the Department of Health and Human Services also were involved in the investigation.
