Cost cutting leads to layoffs at MaineGeneral
Fifteen people at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta will lose their jobs as part of a cost-cutting measure for the next fiscal year. The hospital is eliminating a total of 47 positions, 32 of which are currently vacant and will not be filled.
The majority of the affected positions are support and administration jobs at the hospital as well as its parent organization, MaineGeneral Health, according to the Kennebec Journal. Three of the positions were clinical. The 15 laid-off people have 45 days to seek another job within the hospital. MaineGeneral has more than 2,900 employees.
The cuts will trim $3.5 million from MaineGeneral's nearly $400 million budget for the next fiscal year. President and CEO Chuck Hays attributed the cuts to a drop in state reimbursement funding for MaineCare, which takes effect July 1.
In January, MaineGeneral Medical Center officials announced $5 million in cost-cutting measures as a result of lower revenue.
