Documents recently released indicate property manager Rosa Scarcelli may have been involved in an anonymous website that disparaged her gubernatorial opponent, Eliot Cutler. Scarcelli, however, denies being involved and says the comments she made were taken out of context.
The documents, filed by Cutler's attorney, include email messages and depositions of her, her husband and her political adviser, and show Scarcelli played a more active role in the creation of the Cutler Files website than she initially acknowledged, the Sun Journal and the Portland Press Herald reported. One message shows Scarcelli in 2009 telling her husband, Thomas Rhoads, adviser Dennis Bailey and other staffers that they needed to "start a blog campaign against him." Bailey and Rhoads admitted to creating the website, while Scarcelli has consistently denied being involved, saying Wednesday the accusations are "completely false." She said the comments in the documents were references to campaign research and lighthearted conversations taken out of context. She said her references to a blog were related to posting anonymous comments on newspaper websites. Scarcelli is CEO of Stanford Management in Portland.
The documents were filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland as part of a motion by Cutler's attorney to dismiss Bailey's lawsuit. Bailey is appealing a $200 fine levied against him by the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices for not disclosing who was behind the website.
