Ex-state rep indicted for misuse of public funds

Former York County Rep. David Burns has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of misusing Clean Election funds. The charges came a little more than a week after Burns resigned his Alfred seat.

Burns is charged with one count of theft, three counts of forgery, one count of misuse of entrusted property, one count of violating the Clean Elections Act and three counts of making false reports, according to the Portland Press Herald. The indictment, which follows a Maine Attorney General Office's investigation, claims that Burns diverted more than $1,000 in public campaign funds for personal expenses, then filed false reports. The indictment includes receipts such as $250 spent at an Alfred restaurant and $150 dollars spent at The Home Depot.

In December, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices found Burns responsible for seven civil violations of the use of Clean Election funds, including transferring public money to his personal account and using it for personal expenses. He was ordered to repay $3,000 in improperly spent money and also faced a fine.
