The University of Maine System is expected to hire two-time gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler to oversee establishment of the Alfond Professional and Graduate Center, a new graduate business and law school in Portland.
The university system is expected to announce Cutler’s appointment next week, several people briefed on the appointment told the Portland Press Herald. Cutler was out of the country Tuesday and could not be reached by the Press Herald for comment.
The system leadership would not confirm the pending hire Wednesday, according to the Bangor Daily News. System spokesman Dan Demeritt said “the process is not complete,” no contract has been signed and the system plans to make an official announcement next week.
Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Chris Hall told the BDN Wednesday he was “aware the University of Maine System and Eliot Cutler are in discussions” and working to plan an event in anticipation of an announcement.
The new center would combine the graduate business programs of the University of Southern Maine in Portland and the University of Maine in Orono, as well as the University of Maine School of Law in Portland.
The Press Herald said it still is not clear whether the Muskie School of Public Service at USM would be included in the new center.
