Dead River buys competitor

Dear River Company of Bangor, the state's largest distributor of residential heating fuels, recently acquired Union Oil Co., based in South Portland.

Dead River, which also operates a chain of convenience stores in Maine, has retained Union Oil's 65 employees, adding them to its roughly 1,100 workers, according to a press release. The Bangor company will also honor Union Oil's price protection and service agreements with customers. Both companies are family owned and the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Union Oil was founded in 1921, and Dead River started in 1909.
