Debate over bonds looms

Two proposed multi-million dollar bond packages designed to create new jobs in Maine will be the subject of intense debate Tuesday between House and Senate lawmakers.

Gov. John Baldacci says his $79 million bond package before the appropriations committee would put 2,000 people back to work within the next year and help to protect the jobs of thousands of more workers, according to the Associated Press. Baldacci told the AP the bond would fund work on highways, preservation of freight rail service in Aroostook County and other transportation and energy projects. Democratic leaders have also proposed a $99 million bond package that would fund many of the same projects.

House Minority Leader Josh Tardy of Newport issued a statement opposing the bonds, saying the state "cannot be buried deeper and deeper in debt," according to the AP. Jay Finegan, spokesman for House Republicans, told the Kennebec Journal they hope to gain enough support to block passage of any bond issue, which requires two-thirds votes in the Legislature and approval by voters.
