Decision on Nova Star's future expected this week

The future of Nova Star’s ferry service between Portland and Nova Scotia will be decided this week by Nova Scotia officials, who said there are three other companies vying to take over.

The Associated Press reported that Nova Scotia’s transportation department will be reviewing Nova Star’s financials before issuing a decision. The ferry service, which has been heavily subsidized by the provincial government, underperformed during its inaugural season last year and has only made modest improvements in sales this season.

Geoff MacLellan, Nova Scotia’s transportation minister, previously said that he’s concerned modest sales increases in June and July aren’t enough to cover Nova Star’s costs. He also called into question the ferry service’s plan to run a winter route elsewhere, saying it’s “simply unacceptable” to use Nova Scotia tax money to subsidize the route.
