The 2015 Department of Defense budget passed by the U.S. Congress last week is expected to benefit Bath Iron Works, Pratt & Whitney and other Maine-based military contractors.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the $585 billion defense bill calls for spending $2.7 billion on two DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. BIW is expected to build one of them. The defense bill also calls for spending $419 million on DDG-1000 Zumwalt-class destroyers that will be built at BIW.
In addition, the defense bill will appropriate $6 billion for 38 F-25 Joint Strike fighter planes that have parts supplied by Pratt & Whitney’s manufacturing plant in North Berwick, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems in Saco, Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland and Hunter Dearborn Inc. in Fryeburg. Another $498 million will be spent on F-15 and F-16 jet engines, with 25% of the parts coming from Pratt & Whitney.
