Developer eyes Milo for greenhouses

A vacant mill complex in Milo is being eyed by a Boston-area developer as a potential site for a greenhouse operation that would grow organic vegetables and nursery plants for wholesalers.

Brian Grosse, who purchased the vacant Ox Yoke buildings in 2006, told the Bangor Daily News that he wants to use a small portion of the main mill building for an office and build greenhouses behind it using the six 30-by-200-foot foundations left behind by the earlier American Thread Co. operation. Another building could be used as a warehouse for the operations.

The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council has requested an $180,000 Community Development Block grant to help with the project, which is expected to create six jobs. If the grant is awarded and approved by residents in September, Grosse told the paper he will kick in the remaining funds for the $600,000 project, and hopefully begin production next fall.
