Development orgs. net $1M

Three Maine organizations are receiving a total of $955,210 in federal funds to help revitalize rural communities and businesses.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is doling out more than $9.5 million to 44 community-based organizations and six rural microenterprises in the country, according to a press release. The Eastern Maine Development Corp. in Bangor is receiving a $500,000 loan and a $105,000 grant through the USDA's Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program. EMDC will use the funding to give loans to rural entrepreneurs in Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo and Washington counties, and the funding is expected to save 90 jobs and create 40. Average loans to microentrepreneurs or new business innovators will be $25,000.

Additionally, the Maine Development Foundation and Western Maine Community Action Inc. in East Wilton are receiving grants through the Rural Community Development Initiative Program. MDF will use its $175,105 to invest in the Maine Downtown Center Program and expand downtown revitalization efforts. Western Maine Community Action will receive the same amount to fund its Keeping Seniors at Home network, which offers housing rehabilitation, energy conservation, education and support services to the elderly, according to the release.
