Dirigo deficit nears $20 million

Dirigo Health's deficit has reached nearly $20 million since last November, according to VillageSoup.

The state subsidized health plan ended the fiscal year on June 30 with a deficit of $14.7 million, and grew by an additional $5 million by the end of July. Though Gov. John Baldacci's staff has been aware of this deficit, members of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee learned about it last week when the books closed, according to the news site. The state has been drawing from its general fund cash pool to pay for Dirigo while it looks to find an alternative funding source, including a new tax on beer, wine and soda approved by the Legislature earlier this year that has since been opposed and put on the November ballot.

State officials are scheduled to meet this week to discuss the deficit, according to VillageSoup.
