Down East construction firm fined

A construction firm in Washington County was fined yesterday for safety violations that led to a worker's death last fall.

J&S Carpentry in Columbia was fined $32,000 by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration for violating safety standards last September while working on a modular home in Hermon, according to the Associated Press. Irving Equipment of Hampton, N.H., was also fined $89,500 for the incident, the AP said.

OSHA says J&S and Irving operated a crane too close a power line, which led to the electrocution of one worker and serious injury to another, the AP said. After the companies receive the citation, they have 15 days to contest them before an OSHA committee.
