Downeast Wind proposes 100MW wind farm in Washington County

Downeast Wind, a Maine subsidiary of Apex Clean Energy of Charlottesville, Va., is looking at building a wind energy facility of 30 wind turbines over 9,000 acres in Columbia, Cherryfield and the Townships 18 and 19 area of Washington County, The Quoddy Tides reported.

Apex Clean Energy has wind and solar energy projects in 20 states across the nation.

Company representative Paul Williamson told the paper the Maine subsidiary’s plans are in the development and exploration stage.

"One thing I'm particularly excited about with this project is working with the blueberry growers," he told the paper.

The project is expected to generate about 100 megawatts of power.

Williamson told the paper the project could have direct and indirect economic benefits. He said renewable energy companies formed by Apex Clean Energy have at times resulted in sales of the start-ups to large energy companies.

Last April, Mainebiz reported that Southern New England's need for clean energy to meet ambitious clean energy goals set by each state is driving new wind power investments in Maine.
