Downeaster to add Kennebunk stop

The operator of the Amtrak Downeaster is planning to add a seasonal stop in Kennebunk, which is expected to boost the town’s tourism efforts.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the passenger rail service will make stops in Kennebunk between April and October, starting next year or in 2016.

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, the Downeaster’s operator, and the Maine Department of Transportation are working together to find funding for installation of a temporary platform that could be operational by next year. Construction of a permanent platform, estimated to cost $1.1 million, likely wouldn’t begin until 2016.

Blake Baldwin, chair of the Kennebunk Economic Development Committee, told the Press Herald that the Downeaster stop would help Kennebunk attract more visitors.
