Downeaster ridership exceeds projections

Ridership from the Amtrak Downeaster's expansion up the coast from Portland is nearly double original estimates, according to rail authority officials.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the new train service carried an average of 190 passengers a day between Portland and Brunswick during the month of November.

Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, told the paper that the expected daily average for the service that started Nov. 1 was 100.

Quinn also told the paper that the rail authority intends to have six or seven daily round trips between Portland and Boston, up from three daily round trips operated now. The authority also plans to add more daily round trips from Boston to Brunswick, of which it currently runs two.
