Ducktrap to double capacity at Belfast production plant

Ducktrap River of Maine plans to hire new workers as it doubles the production capacity for smoked salmon and other smoked seafood products at its Belfast operation.

To meet increasing demand, the Belfast-based business plans to increase its processing capacity to approximately 2,500 metric tons, a 45% increase of current capacity. The expansion is expected to add 40 to 50 jobs to the current workforce of 120.

Ducktrap's sales have doubled over the last four years, with the plant currently running at full capacity and turning away large clients, according to general manager Don Cynewski.

"It's phenomenal to see that Ducktrap's parent company, Marine Harvest, is choosing to invest significant financial resources in Belfast and help this facility expand its operations and create a significant number of new jobs in an area which has a need for them," Belfast Economic Development Director Thomas Kittredge said in a prepared statement.

Started in 1977, Ducktrap River of Maine is an all-natural smokehouse located at the Belfast Airport Business Park. The company produces a variety of smoked items including Atlantic Salmon, Marine Stewardship Council-certified wild Sockeye, trout, mackerel, and shellfish, among others, and is owned by the Norway-based seafood company, Marine Harvest.
