The early arrival of snow and cold in Maine has ski resorts large and small preparing for a busy season, with Sunday River in Newry already seeing a 20% increase in skiers and riders over the Thanksgiving weekend compared to last year.
Sunday River opened 32 of its 135 trails, and more snowmaking is scheduled for next week, spokesperson Darcy Morse told the Sun Journal. Morse added that the resort has seen a 5% rise in season pass sales over last year and a 10% increase in Christmas vacation bookings.
Sugarloaf in Carrabassett also saw more than usual traffic over Thanksgiving weekend, spokesperson Ethan Austin told the newspaper, adding that the lateness of that holiday this year may explain the attendance rise. The mountain has 10 of its 154 trails open. Season pass sales are up 10% over last season, Austin said.
Both of those ski areas have invested in energy-efficient snowmaking equipment to assure they have enough snow throughout the season, the newspaper noted.
