East Millinocket could get $5M in federal funding for site work at former paper mill

The town of East Millinocket could receive nearly $5 million in federal funding through the markup of the fiscal year 2024 transportation, housing, and urban development appropriations bill.

The measure passed in the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday and will be voted on by the full Senate and House.

In her role as the committee's vice chair, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, advanced the money that would help continue the redevelopment of the former Great Northern mill site.

“The town of East Millinocket is rich in history and community,” said Collins. “This is in large part due to the Great Northern Paper Company mill, which was a large source of revenue before its closure. This funding would support the continued redevelopment of the former Great Northern Paper Mill site, helping to restore economic opportunities in the region. As the vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for this funding as the appropriations process moves forward.”

The funding would stabilize and rehabilitate the existing structures of the mill. It will also add strategic infrastructure for priority projects and continue site clean-up for redevelopment and construction of new facilities.

"This investment is another important step in East Millinocket’s efforts to revitalize the region’s economy by upgrading the facilities and infrastructure businesses will need to expand and locate on the former Great Northern mill site,” said Michael Michaud, a former U.S. Representative for Maine's northern Congressional district and chairman of East Millinocket Board of Selectmen. “Our redevelopment efforts depend upon the strong support of Maine’s senators, especially Sen. Collins' leadership on the Appropriation Committee, which is critically important for the state of Maine.”
