A month after a luxury yacht group scrapped plans to buy the Boat School in Eastport, three other proposals have surfaced.
David Marlow of Marlow Yachts in July backed out of a proposal to buy the school and establish a marine trades program and yacht manufacturing facility. Now, the city is entertaining pitches from three groups -- Hinckley Yachts of Southwest Harbor, Friends of the Boat School and Perry Marine and Construction, The Quoddy Tides reported. Hinckley expressed interest in touring the facility, but did not say how it would use the property. Friends of the Boat School has proposed buying the 20.8-acre property from the city for $1 and seek investors to continue running the school.
Perry Marine, a joint operation between CPM Constructors in Freeport and Morrison Manufacturing Inc. in Perry, has proposed buying the property for $300,000. The company would use about five acres for an 8,000-square-foot building, where it would handle tidal turbine work for Ocean Renewable Power Co., and would establish a marine service and repair operation. Paul Koziell, COO of CPM, said the company is interested in collaborating with Friends of the Boat School and leasing some property to them to continue operating the school. City officials urged Perry Marine and Friends of the Boat School to discuss a joint proposal that could be presented at a public workshop. Hinckley could also opt to make a presentation on its plans.
ORPC, which is testing a prototype of its tidal turbine generator in Eastport, in December hired Perry Marine to perform construction management and assembly work for its full-scale turbine it plans to install over the next two years.
