Economic outlook is cloudy, but people seem busier than ever

As we head into 2023, we see conflicting reports about what’s ahead for the economy and for Maine businesses.

Talk to any economist and they’ll point to trouble signs: Ongoing inflation, higher interest rates, an ongoing labor shortage. There’s also the looming threat of a recession.

All of these factors are affecting businesses and consumers in Maine.

But the crazy thing is, if you talk to nearly any business leader, they’ll say they’re busier than ever. The pace may slow down this year, but we’re still seeing capital projects, expansions and the need to hire.

For this year’s outlook, we talk to roughly 20 Maine leaders in a range of industries. We asked them to give us the outlook from their perspective; we didn’t ask them to predict what the economy will look like this year.

A familiar face at Mainebiz has been promoted

Andrea Tetzlaff is the publisher of Mainebiz.

Mainebiz is pleased to announce that Andrea Tetzlaff, who came up through the sales ranks over the past decade, has been named publisher.

Many of you remember our longtime publisher, Donna Brassard, who retired in March 2021. After Donna’s retirement, Andrea was named associate publisher and Peter Stanton, who is CEO of our parent company, New England Business Media, took over as publisher.

Andrea joined the Mainebiz advertising sales team in 2013. In 2020, she was named advertising sales director. In her new role, she will oversee all operations at Mainebiz, including sales, editorial, production and events.

“The team at Mainebiz has been the driver of what our product is today. I’m proud of the confidence our ownership has shown in me and I look forward to continuing the Mainebiz mission to engage, inform, and connect businesses around the state,” she said.

In the past two years, Andrea and Peter and I have gone out to visit with companies around the state. These visits are a way to get to know leaders and to get a first-hand look at a company’s operations and area. Those visits will continue — now with Andrea as publisher.

Feel free to reach out to Andrea (atetzlaff@mainebiz.biz) or me to set up a visit!
