Economy sparks spike in seed sales

The sour economy has boosted sales at Maine's seed companies, as more people decide to plant their own vegetable gardens to save money.

The National Gardening Association, a nonprofit based in South Burlington, Vt., is reporting the biggest spike in home garden seed sales in 30 years, and Maine seed companies are reaping the benefits, according to the Bangor Daily News. Winslow-based Johnny's Selected Seeds has seen its sales for vegetable seeds increase 50% this year, and sales at FEDCO Seeds in Waterville have jumped more than 25%. A 32% spike in vegetable seed sales at Pinetree Seeds in New Gloucester prompted the company to increase its staff for the season from eight to 23, owner Dick Meyers told the paper.

The National Gardening Association estimates that the number of homes with vegetable gardens will increase more than 40% compared with two years ago.
