Eimskip expected to boost ME-Canada trade

Portland's new container shipping company, which is expected to strengthen Maine's trade ties with the Canadian Maritimes and Europe, will receive its first loaded cargo containers in Portland harbor later today.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Iceland-based Eimskip, which in February announced it would move its U.S. headquarters from Norfolk, Va., to Portland, is scheduled to receive a 40-container shipment of bottled water from Iceland, and frozen fish from Iceland and Norway.

Kelly L'Heureux, a general manager for the Falmouth-based freight forwarder OCEANAIR Inc., told the paper that the new container service won't need to attract new customers to be viable, but developing a market for Maine exports to Canada and Europe will be key to assuring the company stays in Portland.

In a study released earlier this year, the Maine International Trade Center found that the largest barrier for Maine companies in exporting goods was the cost of trucking those goods to ports in Boston or New York.

The new Portland container service is expected to lower those costs and provide Maine businesses connections to the ports of Argentia and St. Anthony in Newfoundland, Canada, and European destinations.
