Ellsworth hospital cuts 14

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth yesterday laid off 12 full-time and two part-time employees, citing backlogged government reimbursements, and an increase in bad-debt levels and uninsured patients.

The hospital also froze salaries, cut executive compensation and reduced employee benefits, according to the Ellsworth American. The cuts are expected to save the hospital about $900,000 a year, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Maine Coast is the second-largest employer in Hancock County, with 696 employees.
