EMHS chief doc to take Ohio job

Dr. Erik Steele, the first chief medical officer for Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, will leave the Maine health care network, where he completed his residency in 1991, for the same post with an Ohio health care network.

The Bangor Daily News reported Steele has accepted a job with Summa Health System, based in Akron, Ohio. His formal departure date from the 8,000-employee EMHS remains uncertain, but he expects to leave mid-May and begin his new job in June.

Steele became EMHS's first chief medical officer in 2005. He told the paper that Summa's integrated health care network — it is one of 25 to 40 health care organizations in the country with its own health insurance plan — is what drew him to the job. He said that such organizations will be best positioned to innovate as national health care reforms go into effect.
