EMHS wins $13M for IT work

Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer is receiving more than $12.5 million in federal funds to boost its health information technology infrastructure.

The health care organization, parent of Eastern Maine Medical Center, has been awarded a $12.75 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a press release from EMHS. EMHS President and CEO Michelle Hood said the funds will allow the system to better connect to smaller hospitals and providers in the greater Bangor region. The program also includes expanding the number of providers using HealthInfoNet, the state's health information exchange, which is currently in a two-year demonstration phase but aims to cover all Maine's hospitals and 80% of physician practices by 2015.

EMHS is one of 15 nonprofit organizations and government entities to receive funding through the department's Beacon Community Program, which doled out a total of $220 million, according to the release.
