Otten staffer resigns over plagiarism

A staff member responsible for plagiarism in gubernatorial candidate Les Otten's campaign has resigned.

Will Gardiner, an employee at the consulting firm managing Otten's campaign, has resigned from both the campaign and Winthrop-based firm Maine Directions, according to MaineToday Media. The Otten campaign announced Gardiner's resignation in a statement released yesterday afternoon, in which Gardiner admitted to using "personal notes" that included passages from legislative testimony by Steve Bowen of the Maine Heritage Policy Center. Gardiner said the controversy surrounding use of the testimony without citation "has been a distraction" from Otten's campaign. Gardiner worked on the campaign for more than 18 months.

The Otten campaign apologized over the weekend for lifting parts of Bowen's testimony without attribution.
