The state has given final approval to the $17 million sale of three Eastern Maine Medical Center clinics to one of the nation's largest for-profit dialysis chains.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the state's Department of Health and Human Services granted the Colorado-based DaVita Inc. a certificate of need for the deal, which closed Thursday night.
The company will take over EMMC's clinics in Bangor, Ellsworth and Lincoln and assume acute dialysis services at the hospital, the paper reported.
DaVita, which manages over 1,800 clinics in 43 states, will also take on the clinics' 60 employees and 225 patients.
The plan was first announced in March when DaVita was the subject of a criminal investigation by federal grand jury for its relationship with kidney doctors, the paper reported.
The BDN reported that this is DaVita's first move into Maine, where competitor Fresenius Medical Care, which runs two-thirds of the country's dialysis clinics, manages 10 locations.
