Environmental group criticizes regional power plan secrecy
The Boston-based Conservation Law Foundation has submitted public records requests looking into coordination of energy policy among the six New England governors, who they said have been conducting private meetings with energy industry officials.
The Associated Press reported administration representatives in Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts said the process for discussing the state leaders’ proposals will take place publicly. The Conservation Law Foundation argues the governors’ proposal to expand natural gas capacity as a salve for rising electricity prices is based on an assumption that it says has not been tested in public.
The governors have asked the region’s electric grid operator, ISO New England, to help develop a financing plan for a new natural gas pipeline, which could be partly supported by New England electricity customers. Through the plan, the governors are also seeking proposals for lines to transmit up to 3,600 megawatts of hydropower from Canada to New England.
